The Mineral Physics Institute has been at the forefront of developing techniques for using Synchrotron radiation in conducting
in situ high pressure and high temperature experiments. Currently, the research conducted by members of MPI routinely makes use of Synchrotron facilities at both the National Syncrotron Light Source at Brookhaven Nation Lab in Upton, NY, and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, IL (outside of Chicago). Both of these facilities have beamlines with equipment specifically designed for conducting a variety of high pressure/temperature experiments including both large-volume multi-anvil apparatuses and small-volume (but higher pressure) Diamond Anvil Cells.
The list below contains web links to individual sites with more information regarding the different beamlines used by members of the Mineral Physics Institute.
Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory
GSECARS - Housed at Sector 13 of the APS, the GeoSoilEnviroCARS facility has beamlines that can accomodate both multi-anvil and diamond anvil studies.
HPCAT - The High Pressure Collaborative Access Team that operates at Sector 16 of the APS, and has facilities for research at high pressure using Diamond Anvil Cells.
HPSynC - Not a beamline per se, the High Pressure Synergetic Consortium at the APS is a group designed to establish high-pressure environments at many beamlines of the APS for the science community, and to make novel synchrotron techniques available to high-pressure researchers.
National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory
U2A - IR beamline U2A houses a Diamond Anvil Cell facility that allows for infrared studies of materials at high pressures, and with the right equipment, high temperatures as well.
X17B2 - The official website for X-ray beamline X17B2, which is the home of the multi-anvil facilities at the NSLS.
X17B3 - This is the website for the X-ray beamline housing the Diamond Anvil Cell facility next-door to X17B2 at the NSLS.
X17C - And this site is for the X-ray beamline housing the Diamond Anvil Cell Facility next-door to the Diamond Anvil Cell Facility next-door to X17B2 at the NSLS.
